May 11, 2017, Washington DC – The U.S. Senate confirmed (82-14) Robert Lighthizer as U.S. Trade Representative with the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Lighthizer served as deputy trade representative in the Reagan administration. Joining 13 Democrats voting against Lighthizer were Senators John McCain, R-Ariz., and Ben Sasse, R-Neb., who expressed concerns about the nominee’s less-than-strong support for the North American Free Trade Agreement.
